go the eff to sleep.

A night owl by nature and an anxious one to boot, it has always been difficult for me to keep a reasonable bedtime. Well, that's not wholly true. I can get into bed at a specific time, but it can take me hours to actually fall asleep. Which means that when Kevin finishes up whatever work he's doing in the living room and falls asleep within thirty seconds of his head hitting the pillow it makes me want shake him and say what is WRONG with you?!?

Because he's not often very thrilled when I do that, I decided that I'd start a new winding-down for bedtime routine for January, with the hope that I'd be able to fall asleep sooner upon getting in bed.

I said I'd write a bedtime routine post yesterday, but as I got started yesterday evening, I got too sleepy, which I'll take as a ringing endorsement for bedtime routines. Our living room serves as our dining room, living room, and office, so that's where you'll find us most nights. The arc lamp in that room is on a dimmer switch, so about an hour before bed, we've started to make sure to lower the light. Then I've taken to having a cup of hot tea.

One  of my favorite things in Nashville is a shop called Las Paletas, owned by two sisters who made amazing popsicles in flavors that taste like magic. Rose petal, with its bits of crushed petal stirred and frozen into cream, was the most beautiful by far. It tasted how roses smell.  (Picture on the left by Jennifer Davick.)

Tazo "Rest" tea brings a similar flavor to a mug near you, made with rose petals, valerian root, and citrus. It's delicious with a bit of vanilla almond milk, and is the perfect pre-bedtime starting-to-wind-down beverage. It's warm and soothing and, if you are me, reminds you of the giant rose bushes in your apartment building's backyard as a child.

So that's my step one: lower and/or dim the amount of light you're getting (if you absolutely must use a laptop or phone, turn down the brightness settings) and drink some liquid comfort.

When I start to get tired, I'll head into the bathroom to take care of teeth brushing and face washing. Last night, I moved a small lamp from the kitchen into the bathroom so I wouldn't have to use the bright overheads as I was getting ready for bed. It made things very cozy.

This is also a great time to sneak some aromatherapy in; my pick is the French Cade & Lavender scent candle by Voluspa. I love, love, love this scent and just put in an order for a mini version to keep on my nightstand.

Depending on time and motivation I don't know that I will do this every night, but last night I dry-brushed my skin and moisturized with coconut oil before stepping into my pajamas. Also very relaxing. I am in love with coconut oil. I use it throughout the day to moisturize my lips and hands. This kind is my fave:

Once I hop in bed I do a minute or two of child's pose and some deep breathing before I lie down. I have a little tin of lavender-bergamot balm that I use on my temples and a few other pulse points. By this time Kevin has usually put a show on for me (most often The Office, sometimes The Simpsons... it has to be something I've seen a million times so it's not distracting), and then when I'm ready to fall asleep I use an accupressure pillow to cover my eyes*. I've tried using sleep masks in the past and I kind of hate them. They always slip off, and in the process they jank up my hair. The pillow is in a soft silk case, and is filled with lavender scented flax seed.

*Having something on in the background has been my sleeping crutch for forever; otherwise my mind stays too active.  Eventually, I'd like to phase it out.

And that's my routine. Oh, and we also have our air purifier running on medium for ambient noise to help us stay asleep through the night.

More so than these steps (that are specific to me and my tastes), coming up with a routine of your own and sticking to it is the most important part. Then each night when you start doing those familiar things, your body will automatically sense that it's time to start winding down and preparing for sleep.

Here's to hoping good habits will replace the bad.
P.S.  If all else fails, let Samuel L. set you straight:

  1. I so have the same problem, and I love the sound of your routine (and those popsicles! Holy delicious sounding!). I have a lavender linen spray I use on my sheets that sometimes helps me, but usually I won't fall asleep until I feel exhausted enough to turn off the tv/put down the book I was reading. I like the sound of a routine much better!

    1. I'm right there with you. If I'm reading a book, I wait until my head literally rolls forward and I jerk back awake for a second in order to turn of the light and drop the book on the floor. Someone yesterday suggested using a less-interesting book before bed, but I think being bored would just cause me to retreat into my own thoughts, which is the problem in the first place!

  2. I'm obsessed with Tazo Rest. Excellent choice! This is part of my wind-down routine too. Also, I've been wanting to try dry-brushing, so maybe now is the time to give that a go.

Hope you guys had a great time in Texas-- Happy New Year!

  3. Lauren! Hi! It's Shannon (not too sure if you remember me).
But, I have been following your blog since Maggie showed it to me, and I try to keep up with your postings as much as possible (you know, when I'm NOT working 16 hours a day). Your blog really helps to keep me going! I've been through some what similar situations, and you give me much hope! As far as sleeping goes, I'm the queen of restless nights. I can't sleep to anything I've seen or heard before, because, if I have it memorized (Seinfeld, Frasier, The Office) AND it's hilarious, I kind of end up lifting my head and watching. What works for me but usually NO ONE else is sound machines, the sound of humidifiers and spraying my room with a Fig and Rose mist. ALSO, Bath and Body Works Sleep Spray and Lotion usually helps me. Or something with a cooling effect, like Tiger Balm but less extreme on the chest really helps my breathing- which I have issues with because of anxiety. I also love Lavender and Sage scented candles, mack daddy of helping me sleep. Hope that some of these suggestions work for you! OH, and hot lavender or chamomile tea. Bonsoir!

    1. Hi Shannon, of course I remember you! I'm so glad to hear you've been getting something out of what I've been writing-- that's why I do it! I love sound machines, too. My friend told me about an app called Relax Melodies that I really like. It's free and completely customizable.

  4. BAHAHA ohh, Samuel. When that first emerged, I just thought it was one of the greatest things ever. I could stand to implement a few of these myself. So often my brain is too full of stuffs for me to fall asleep, and it is, needless to say, maddening. Luckily, almost all of the bulbs in my overhead lights have been going out recently, and I haven't bothered to replace any of them. Way too harsh for my liking. I might be putting my make-up on in the dark, but whatever it takes to get some rest...

    1. See, now I can say that burnt out bulb I haven't touched in weeks is a deliberate choice. A health choice, no less. Genius.

  5. It sounds like you have thought out a great bedtime routine with plenty of different facets to your approach...I hope this will make for some wonderful, restful nights in 2013! Have you tried cooking with coconut oil? It's so versatile- works equally well for high-heat cooking, moisturizing, and turning into yummy cocoa or peppermint bark!

    1. Thanks for the well-wishes, I hope so too! I actually have not ever cooked with coconut oil. I'm pretty pathetic when it comes to cooking, but my boyfriend and I have talked about the need for a higher-heat oil than olive in our kitchen. Coconut's on our list-- is it good for veggies? Does it give a coconutty flavor? I'm interested in avocado oil, too. I have so much to learn!

  6. Sorry for butting in about the coconut oil, but it's great for vegetables, and slightly coconutty! That app is incredible, you can mix sounds and it's just SO soothing. I always mix "Rain on a car window" (oddly specific) and crickets chirping. I think it's called night time. I also try scrubbing with a sugar scrub with a calming smell when I shower before bed, the steam coupled with the smell is incredible.

  7. Oh, that app is heaven sent. They've got oddly specific noises, that actually sound dead on, and mesh into one another perfectly. Also, I hate to be nosey, but as I write this it's sitting at the top of my screen. Coconut oil is incredible, especially for veggies, and gives them a slight sweetness. It's incredible. One of my favourite dishes is actually angel hair pasta, with light veggies like snow-peas and green onions, with half a teaspoon to a teaspoon of coconut oil. Amazing.

I was also thinking, maybe you should try a really earthy, rich smelling body scrub right before bed. That coupled with the steam always helps me breathe easier and stray away from thinking too much.

    1. Ooh, I'll have to try coconut oil in pasta. That sounds good!

  8. I am getting a little concerned about the extent to which our similarities overlap! Right down to the tea and coconut oil (but sans the candle, which I will have to do from now on) this is my bedtime routine! We prefer the ambient noise of Futurama, though!

  9. I was sent from Sarah Von (you know, metephorically speaking). I love to hear about other people's routines. Lately, I've been drinking Sleepy Time tea before bed. A few nights ago I forgot and had the most terrible time falling asleep! I also have a rule of turning my computer off at 10:30, though that can get away from me some times.

    1. Hi Rachel! Glad you found your way over :) I always get so interested in finding out what works/what doesn't for others, too. I haven't faithfully stuck to this routine every single night--sometimes not for days on a row--but I'm remembering "progress over perfect" and "something instead of nothing." And I fall asleep SO much more easily when I do follow it. But yes, I get tempted by the computer too!
